Mosaics - 3 Column
This mosaic features a motif of eyes familiar throughout religions and ethnicities in the Middle East. In Israel, where I grew up, the eye was a symbol of good luck and protection across the many local cultures. During these troubled times, in an increasingly fragmented society—both in the Middle East and in the United States—this symbol of protection and luck feels more urgent than ever. But the diversely colored eyes looking outward directly at the viewer from the piece also speak to a modern interpretation of the eye symbol: the eyes serve as a reminder to us to bear witness. They demand of the viewer that they behold the deep injustices of our society and lend us the strength and moral direction to make right what is wrong.

Pregnancy, the power of a woman’s body to create new and separate life, is profoundly inspiring to me. This mosaic, “Black and White,” represents the tension between self and other that develops between woman and baby over the course of a pregnancy. The white space, powerful and nourishing to the eye, represents the embrace of the woman’s body, whose womb, captured in the repeated motif of the cyclical rings, supports the baby’s growth and development. The black spaces represent the mysterious, still unknowable essence of the growing child, whose existence interpolates the mother’s being in countless ways, but who remains out of sight until birthed into the world.

In my work, the symbol of the circle represents femininity and womanhood. This series of brightly colored circle mosaics represents the empowerment of women to inhabit bright, unapologetic models of femininity. The circles of various sizes, shapes, and textures boldly utilizing the space of the mosaic represent the diversity of woman reclaiming their womanhood and resisting the profound social pressures placed on woman to exist only in closely controlled aesthetic and political modes. The mosaics speak to the historical progress that has been made in allowing women to live freely, but are also aspirational, looking towards a global future of female empowerment and freedom.

This mosaic was inspired by my visit to Mexico to participate in Día de los Muertos or day of the dead celebrations. The color and richness of this tradition brings to life and honors the deceased members of the community, transfiguring their memories into beautiful art and joyful celebration. My own art seeks to use our collective memory—symbolic memory, aesthetic memory, historical memory—as a means of celebrating and reconnecting to the past in the context of our present lives.

The rich and varied plants in this earth-toned motif speak to the colors and patterns of the desert climates that make up much of the middle east. Despite the aridity, these ecosystems are rich with diverse plant and animal life. Looking closely at the landscape, one begins to appreciate the stimulating shapes and colors that make up these landscapes. The rich and varied plants in this earth-toned motif speak to the colors and patterns of the desert climates that make up much of the middle east. The Garden series is an homage to my love of urban gardening. Here in New York City, we gardeners make do with small spaces. Like the strictly boundaried edges of these mosaics, we fill these limited spaces with a startling array of colors and shapes. Over the years, I’ve grown to appreciate the challenge of containing so much beauty in such tight quarters; an enjoyment that translates to both my garden and my art.

This mosaic is inspired by my own daughter. Her individual components are made up of a diversity of aspects; each section of her figure composed of different colors, textures, and shapes. The sum of these parts is a striking young woman standing, hands on hips, looking boldly out at her viewer, and at the promise of her future.
